Meet the BMW M2

In the bumpf for the new M2, BMW draws a parallel back to the 2002 Turbo of 1973. We’re not so sure that’s necessarily a good idea. The 2002 Turbo was notoriously tricky to handle, largely thanks to massive turbo lag. Still, it’s since become an icon was BMW’s first properly fast small coupe.

The M2 continues the tradition, to put it mildly. Under the bonnet lives a new version of BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine producing, thanks to a new blower and uprated internals, 365bhp and 343lb/ft of torque (369lb/ft on overboost).

Those numbers put the M2 in direct competition with hyper hatches like the Audi RS3 and Mercedes-AMG A45. Unlike those, though, the M2 is rear-wheel-drive and comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. A seven-speed dual clutch ‘box is optional and quicker, sprinting from 0-62mph in 4.3secs (4.5secs manual). Top speed is limited to 155mph either way, though that can be raised to 168mph with the optional driver’s package.

Running gear has been upgraded to cope, starting with a 64mm stretch to the front track and 71mm at the rear. Various suspension components are made from lightweight forged aluminium, saving 3kg of unsprung mass at each corner.

Wheels are 19in forged items wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres, 245mm wide at the front, 265mm at the rear. An Active M Differential splits the power between the rear wheels, while M Dynamic Mode allows “moderate, controlled drifts.” Tasty.

The wheelarches bulge out to cover the wider stance, giving the M2 some serious visual muscle. An aggressive front bumper with gaping intakes combines with the new side sills, rear apron and spoiler to reduce drag and increase downforce. The interior is suitably sportified, too, with new seats and trim.

Prices for the BMW M2 will start at £44,070 when the M2 goes on sale in the UK next April. That puts it halfway between the RS3 and A45, and the Porsche Cayman S, which BMW also considers a rival.
