Meet the Renault Sandero RS you can’t buy

On paper, the Renault Sandero RS looks like it’s tailor-made for hot hatch-loving Europe.

Based on the thoroughly likable, pared-back hatchback, it’s small, light (1,161kg), has suitably pugnacious styling and a big engine under the bonnet. Specifically, a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, non-turbo unit producing 148bhp.

With not much weight to haul around, that’s enough for a 0-62mph time of 8.5 seconds, and a top speed of 126mph. Not exactly ripsnorting, but plenty in the real world.

The suspension is 26mm lower and a lot stiffer – 17 per cent front, 65 per cent rear – which sharpens up the handling considerably. In case you hadn’t already guessed, ‘RS’ stands for Renaultsport, the wizards responsible for some the finest hot hatches there have ever been. So it’s a fair bet the driving experience won’t be shabby.

Unfortunately, we here in Europe will never get to find out, as the Sandero RS will only be available in Latin America. It’s a toe-in-the-water exercise, a ‘soft’ launch for the Renaultsport brand in a market where hot hatches aren’t anything like as popular as they are over here.

You never know, though. If enough people pester their local Dacia dealer – the brand the Sandero is sold under in the UK – Renault could be persuaded to change their mind…
