The small hot hatch segment is full of hero versions of most people’s daily runarounds. From the likes of the Ford Fiesta ST, Volkswagen Polo GTI, Peugeot 208 GTi, and Vauxhall Corsa VXR. These are just a few of the names that are in this class alongside the Clio RS.
Even still with all this competition, it’s the Renault Clio 220 Trophy that is the quickest around the Nurburgring.
Sport Auto have ran a number of Nurburgring lap times so it’s no surprise they were able to extract the very best out of the Renaultsport Clio Trophy. The 220 hp hot hatch did a lap time of 8 minutes and 23 seconds which is not only better than it’s rivals but better than some much more powerful cars.
The Renault Clio’s laptime is most notably three seconds faster than the previous generation Ford Focus RS which packed 80hp more than the Clio.
The Renault Clio RS 220 Trophy was introduced earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. It’s got 20 hp more than the standard Renaultsport Clio, an improved gearbox (although it is still a dual-clutch transmission) improved suspension and handling.
The Renaultsport magicians have done it again, even though this Clio doesn’t satisfy many of the hot hatch purists out there, it’s undoubtedly one of the best small hot hatch packages out there.
