There’s suddenly a lot of choice in the Skoda Octavia vRS range. There used to be a fairly easy choice between petrol or diesel, manual or automatic, hatchback or estate.

Skoda recently added a 230bhp version of the vRS – with the same gearboxes and bodies – and now there’s a four-wheel-drive option.

Things are simpler this time, as the vRS 4×4 is only available with the 181bhp, 2.0-litre TDi diesel engine and six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. Now you just have to decide whether you want the hatchback or the estate.

With 280lb/ft of torque to haul it along, the vRS 4×4 dispatches the 0-62mph sprint in 7.6 seconds. Economy numbers haven’t been announced, but bear in mind that an Octavia Scout with the same drivetrain returns a claimed 56.5mpg and emits 129g/km of Co2.

Prices start at £27,315 for the Skoda Octavia vRS 4×4 hatchback and £28,515. Prices across the whole vRS range will increase £400 in November, but all models will come with satnav as standard, previously a £755 option.
