I think I’m right in saying that there have been more special edition versions of the Mazda MX-5 than any other car. Maybe apart from the Mini.
Now there’s a 42nd special edition to add the tally, the new Mazda MX-5 Icon – a nameplate we’ve seen three times previously. It’s based on the top-spec 129bhp 1.5 SE-L Nav model, complete with leather seats, satnav, rear parking sensors and automatic lights and wipers.
A front splitter, rear spoiler and door mirrors in red mark the Icon out. It’s available in white or grey with 16in gunmetal wheels.
The Icon will debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed alongside the upcoming hardtopped MX-5 RF, Speedster and Spyder concept cars, and the millionth production MX-5. Since it went to sale here in 1990, 120,000 MX-5s have been sold in the UK.
600 copies of the Icon edition will be built; it goes on sale in August, priced at £20,995.
