TOYOTA Land Cruisers are mainly seen on News at Ten in war-torn countries with rebel fighters driving them over treacherous terrain and hurling grenades at each other.
That’s mainly because they are pretty much indestructible.
How fast they go is never much of a concern.
Well that’s just all changed.
Because the Tonka Toyota has just become the world’s fastest SUV.
Yep, you can forget your Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and Maserati Levante because the Land Cruiser has smoked ‘em all.
Former NASCAR driver Carl Edwards has just ripped a heavily-modified Land Cruiser along a 2.5-mile runway at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California at 230MPH.
That broke the previous record set by the Brabus Bi-Turbo V12 GLK, which had a top speed of 211mph.
In fairness to Brabus, that was an actual production vehicle while the Land Cruiser is based on the stonking high performance concept from the Las Vegas SEMA show last year.
Starting out with a 375bhp V8 – capable of just 142mph in a showroom model – Toyota engineers added a pair of “volleyball-sized” turbochargers to significantly boost performance, with loads of other mechanical add-ons to deliver a staggering total power output just shy of 2,000bhp.
Test driver Craig Stanton admitted: “I wanted the Land Speed Cruiser to provide the confidence you need, as a driver, to keep pushing even when the world around you becomes a high speed blur.
“We made some setup adjustments, and it not only accelerates and shifts more smoothly, but it also has enhanced stability.”
Stanton reached 198mph in his warm-up run, before handing responsibilities over to Carl Edwards. The 37-year-old matched the existing 211mph record at the first time of asking, before more power was dialled in for his second attempt.
Describing his record-breaking run, Edwards said: “At 225 mph, the thing was wandering a little bit. All I could think was that Craig said, ‘No matter what, just keep your foot in it,’ and we got 230 mph. It’s safe to say that this is the fastest SUV on the planet.”
Indestructible, super-fast (and also great on the school run in the snow).
Oh yes, the Land Cruiser is officially the best car in the world.
